Elles se composent de quatre îlots de porphyre rouge sombre.
Havre de paix pour les oiseaux marins, et flore riche en espèces rares et endémiques, ce site est classé Natura 2000.
Son appellation provient de différentes hypothèses, elle s’est concrétisee grâce à une carte maritîme datée de 1584, réalisée par Abraham Orteluis, ainsi que sur une autre carte de 1573 et 1567 de Leandro Alberti.
